Information Technology (IT) is both life and world changing. It has changed the way we learn, interact and do business. At Jidaw we insist that IT is the tool that shapes the future. But IT is nothing without knowledge. It?s easy to get carried away with the gadgets, the tools, and the new but think strategic ? IT education is fundamental. Nigeria has not started the journey until it makes IT education a priority. Creating the future through IT means Nigeria must encourage, promote and support efforts and initiatives in IT education. So what are the issues in IT education and what steps must be taken to get to where we are going? Future prosperity depends on a citizenry that is digitally literate and skilled. How do we deliver? It is clear that the old existing status quo will not get us anywhere. It works for some, but at the end of the day is the impact significant enough to make the difference? I guess you know the disturbing answer. It is no wonder that the longtime theme behind Jidaw?s IT education programs is: ?The Total Disrespect of Status Quo?.
The Total Disrespect of Status Quo
Widespread, inclusive IT education is the foundation needed to build a modern society and economy that serves the interests of all. It?s time to get radical. It?s time to be provoked out of our comfort zone. Continued nesting is not our interest. It?s time to rock the boat. Jidaw is involved in and enthusiastic about the development of human capital, but our experience is that happiness is far away when one observes the daily waste of potential and resources. Pockets of activity aren?t enough.
Please don?t mix things up. IT education is not the magic key, it is not the one and only solution, but it is fundamental. Without an IT education strategy we will be condemned to become consumers wandering round in circles in the dark. God forbid!
Learning Purpose and Progress
There is no doubt that IT education perspectives must disrespect status quo. We must rethink the current education system with a focus on inclusion and innovation. The IT sphere is so wide, do we have areas of focus? What is the learning focus? Learning must have purpose. Our view at Jidaw is that we must never ridicule or underestimate the impact of serious learning efforts underway in formal, informal, government and private institutions. But overall are we making progress? Which parameters will we use to determine winning or losing? Does learning translate to automatic growth? Who will be the winners?
Think beyond hype.
Put purpose in the mix by placing emphasis on developing the human capital required to create and support a knowledge-based society.
