French take airport in Mali Islamist stronghold

By James Regan and David Lewis, Reuters

KONNA, Mali - French forces in Mali have seized the airport and the bridge over the Niger River at the Islamist rebel-held stronghold of Gao, the French Defence Ministry said Saturday.

French and Malian forces have advanced rapidly against Islamist militant fighters holding the Saharan north of the West African state after France intervened earlier this month at the request of the Malian government.

On Friday, al-Qaida-allied fighters were forced to pull back under relentless French air strikes and the town of Hombori, about 100miles southwest of Gao, was recaptured.

French and Malian troops have been pushing forward on either side of the Niger River, securing several farming towns recaptured over the last week.

Gao, with the other Saharan desert towns of Timbuktu and Kidal, has been occupied since last year by an Islamist alliance that includes AQIM, the north African franchise of al-Qaida.

Mali's national radio said Hombori's inhabitants turned out to cheer the government soldiers.

Western and African leaders say the U.N.-backed intervention in Mali is necessary to stop the country's north - a vast, lawless tract of desert and mountains that juts into the Sahara - from becoming a safe haven for radical Islamist jihadists seeking to launch international attacks.

A Malian officer and residents living in the area south of Gao reported Thursday that the militants had blown up a bridge at Tassiga, south of Ansongo, on the road following the Niger River down to Niger.

Two civilians were reported killed when their vehicle drove off the destroyed bridge, the same sources said.?

Creating a Golden Age of Schooling | The Roanoke Star

A 2009 study found that students in the United States ranked 25th among 34 countries in math and science. Some cite this study alongside wistful comments about the so-called ?Golden Age? of education in America during the 1950s and 1960s. Others reference the success of Finland?s schools as the world?s remedy for a seemingly broken education system. Both presumptions are misleading.

The notion of the United States on the downward track is likely a myth. Education columnist Jay Matthews stated in an op-ed piece in The Washington Post in 2011 that ?we have been mediocre all along as far back as 1964. If anything, we have lately been showing some signs of improvement.? His column also noted increasing concerns in Finland about the academic preparedness of its young people. Every country has problems with its education system, it seems, but support for better and more focused math and science courses is increasing. Matthew concluded with these encouraging words: ?We should stop talking about some golden age of schooling that never existed, and instead look for ways to create one.?

How might we create a ?Golden Age? of education?

Let me make a prefatory reference to a July 2012 report from Harvard University?s Program on Education Policy and Governance. Its authors warned, ?Because rates of economic growth have a huge impact on the future well-being of the nation, there is a simple message. A country ignores the quality of its schools at its economic peril.? An investment in sound education then is an investment in the future economic sustainability of the nation.

A ?Golden Age? of education begins with two crucial aspects of the program: its educators and administrators, and its curriculum. Without meaning to be tautological, the former must be educated: that is, they must have incontestable credentials and experience germane to their respective fields. A football coach may not be qualified to teach biology just because he knows a thing or two about hamstrings and concussions; a biologist needs to teach biology! The second crucial aspect of any education program, of course, is a unified national curriculum. For the economic sustainability of our nation, it must be grounded in math and science. I don?t intend to discount other disciplines such as languages, arts, history, and religion; but math and science afford an important contextual platform as a starting point. Science provides for the study of natural phenomena, and math is its language. Every person on the planet needs an effective understanding of both to be a responsible citizen.

A word or two about standardized tests. In a ?Golden Age? of education, such mandated tests would not be allowed apart from one exam at the end of a student?s senior year in high school. The curriculum (and all its valuable resources) would focus instead on preparing young people to learn, not how to take a test. Good-bye, then, to SATs, Advanced Placement tests, GREs; in fact, good-bye, Educational Testing Service, also known as ETS. Finland and other places have showed the potential success of jettisoning something that yields so little value to the education of young people.

Do you know about ETS? Before its 1996 spin-off into a for-profit, its annual corporate revenues exceeded $380 million with income surpassing expenses by $4.8 million. Its largest income sources were its College Board programs ($134 million) and graduate school testing ($68 million). Government grants totaled almost $20 million. Its president received a total annual compensation of just under $339,000 plus the use of a manor house on the former horse estate where ETS is based in New Jersey. No doubt, these figures increased after the 1996 creation of its for-profit; but to what degree? This spectacular outlay of money ? from the pockets of test-takers and taxpayers ? seems a shameful exploitation of what?s supposed to be the education of our youth. ETS, and all its programs, should be abolished henceforth from the halls of academia. In a unified national curriculum, we can do better.

And a word or two about the science curriculum. Whether the subject is biology, physics, or chemistry, its framework should be ecology and evolution: the present and past, if you will, of all natural interlinked phenomena. Theodosius Dobzhansky, a prominent evolutionary biologist and educator, once wrote, ?Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.? I would modify this maxim: ?Nothing in life makes sense except in the light of evolution.? We should reject unreservedly the falsity and pseudoscience of so-called creationism to relegate it to the classrooms of religion, not science, as a companion to astrology, alchemy, and ancient astronauts. Further, we should reject the tiresome arguments against human-accelerated climate change. The evidence for global warming is unequivocal based on actual observations with the most rapid warming since the 1950s and very likely (95% confidence) anthropogenic. Climate change is upon us. It?s our fault. We don?t have time to waste in futile debates with naysayers who might benefit from a few good lessons in math and science.

Perhaps a ?Golden Age? of education is an illusion, always an apple on a tree just out of reach. But our global ranking as 25th in math and science indicates plainly that we have both a problem and an opportunity to excel in our collective understanding of Earth and all its living treasures. Let?s reach for that apple!

Blaize is an 18-year-old old autistic child with mental disabilities. His dream when he turned 18 on July 28, 2012, was to become a police officer. The best I could do was get him the outfit and call JPD to surprise him.

So she called to ask about a special visit for Blaize, and right away, an officer showed up to their Louisiana home.

"They pulled it together real fast?Blaize was the happiest 18 year old I have ever seen!" Richard wrote on Facebook.

After that, Blaize visited the police headquarters with Hill, his new hero and one of the department?s most beloved cops. Afterwards, Richard wrote:

Blaize had his visit at the JPD and got a tour that put a smile on his face from ear to ear!! He received a certificate and a special JPD coin.

"Since that day, Mike Hill has come to our home on 3 different occasions just to visit his 'backup,'" Richard wrote.

During the latest visit, Hill brought a police calendar for Blaize that included photos of all the officers.

The Richards aren't the only ones taking notice, either. This month, Hill was named Officer of the Year.

Al Green turned down inaugural singing request

Getty Images file

By Alexis L. Loinaz, E! Online

Last year, President Barack Obama paid tribute to Al Green by belting out a few lines from his classic hit "Let's Stay Together." Unfortunately, though, Green had to pass up the chance to return the favor this time around.

The legendary singer had to turn down a request to sing at the prez's inaugural ball Monday, per published reports.

In a statement, Green's rep confirmed that while the singer had indeed been approached to perform at the gala, he had to decline due to scheduling conflicts.

Watch Obama break into song!

Instead, it was Jennifer Hudson who ended up crooning Green's classic song at the inaugural ball.

Last year, Obama brought the house down at a fundraiser in New York City by busting out an impromptu rendition of "Let's Stay Together."

See pics of celebs partying at the Inaugural Balls

And although the crooner in chief only sang a teeny riff, he later deferred to the music legend, who was indeed in the audience.

"I cannot sing like you," Obama told Green. "I just wanted to show my appreciation."

No doubt, that gracious gesture wasn't lost on Green.

Mr. and Mrs. Huxtable Please Step-Aside, the Obamas Have ...

Mr. and Mrs. Huxtable as difficult as it is for me to say this, apparently you have been replaced. For years families, including my own, sat down in front of the television screen and looked to you for entertainment. Your wisdom coupled with wit had us aspiring to be our own versions of the Huxtables. Your family faced ?real? issues but you got through them and for some of us you were the couple we sought to model in our own lives. And then it hit us (or at least some of us), not everything on television is real. Yes, it can be entertaining, relatable, and based on actual events but unless it?s live TV it isn?t real and these days, even live television is questionable.

With all due respect, fortunately, this century brought with it a new couple for us to learn from, a couple that has set an example for us, a couple that shows us that black marriages can last and that a little PDA is a good thing. They are a couple that shows us that our unions are beautiful and strong, and will not accept defeat no matter how much adversity they face. This couple has shown us that family can come first and that you can be a spouse, a parent, and an achiever of your dreams. I?m talking about the Obamas. We?ve been watching them for the past several years and I must say, one of my favorite things about them is that they are real. They aren?t casted characters and there is no script or a director designating their every move. They are simply living and in their everyday lives we, still very much viewers, get to have a glimpse of what their marriage is like.

Recently a study came out stating the Obamas have ?replaced? you. A real life couple replaced a television couple. And I?ve got to tell you, while The Cosby Show had quite a run and gave us some great laughs and things to think about when it comes to our marriages, I believe so many of us aspire to be more. We grow up and realize that dreams and goals don?t stop once the credits to a television show roll. They continue. Life continues beyond a 30-minute television time slot. Life is not scripted.

According to the study, we idolize Mr. and Mrs. Obama. But we know better. We idolize no man. We clearly know who our source is and as much as we love the Obamas it?s not them. Admiration and idolization are not to be confused. One thing they seem to have gotten right; however, is this:

?The Obamas are the strongest and most visible example of black love and happy marriage in the USA.?

You see, when you are The President of the United States everyone is watching. When you are married to the President everyone is watching. So yes, we are all watching. And yes, we do admire the love our President and First Lady have for one another. Yet, don?t be mistaken, there are surely other couples out there that have a beautiful love, an admirable love, and a real love. The only difference is the world isn?t necessarily watching.

The Obamas are on display and they are on display for more than the 30 minute time slot you all were given. Even so Mr. and Mrs. Huxtable, while we may not model our lives after the two of you, you will always have a special place in our hearts. And if we are channel surfing and just so happen to stumble upon your show, chances are we will watch. But there is a big world out there, a world filled with men and women that are showing us that black love is beautiful and genuine.

Despite high divorce rates many of us have not given up on marriage. We are fighting for what we have. While television shows run their course, many of us are determined to make sure our marriages will not. We are working in offices, seated in church pews, authoring blogs, cheering for our children during sports games, and also walking the halls of the White House. We are everywhere.

There are many couples that we can look to and yes, the Obamas are one of them.

BMWK ? Do you agree with the study? Have the Huxtables been replaced?

Libya reinforces border, oilfields after Algeria attack

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya has strengthened its oil protection force in southwestern oilfields near the Algerian border after the In Amenas attack in its neighbor.

In an interview with Reuters, Colonel Ali Elahrash, head of Libya's Petroleum Faculty Guard, said men from the Western Mountain town of Zintan had been sent in as reinforcements to boost border security as well to oilfields in the area.

Last week's raid on the Algerian desert plant, about 100 km (60 miles) from the Libyan border pushed Saharan militancy to the top of the global agenda.

Libyan oilfields, like Italy's Eni's El Feel and Spain's Repsol's Sharara, are several hundred miles away.

Oil force members on leave swiftly returned to work, while other former rebel fighters from Zintan - whose men already guards oil fields in the area - were also dispatched.

"As soon as we heard about what happened in Algeria we upped the level of security, especially in the area close to the border," Elahrash said at his office in the Libyan capital.

"Most of the forces have been sent to the border, they are doing a lot of patrols which is helpful for protecting the oil fields; support has also been sent to the fields. We think there are enough forces and enough equipment to protect the area."

Walid Hassan Mohammed, director of public relations, said hundreds of men were sent; while the force usually deploys 50 to 100 men at fields there, it now had at least 100 at the sites.

The 15,000 strong Petroleum Faculty Guard, the majority made up of former rebel fighters from the 2011 war that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, is divided into five branches across the country.

The southwestern area - which looks after the El Feel, Sharara and other oilfields - comes under the Zintan branch.

An operations room has been set up in Zintan and Tripoli.

"They may not have the experience because many of them are not from the army, they are rebel fighters but they want to protect their country," Elahrash said.

NEW EQUIPMENT NEEDED

OPEC members Libya and Algeria are Africa's third and fourth largest oil producers with Libya also holding the largest oil reserves on the continent.

A foreign worker close to the Libyan-Algerian border said he had seen more pick-ups mounted with anti-aircraft guns and a boosting of man power in the last few days.

"Pretty much everyone was on essential expat manning prior to the (In Amenas) incident, due to the instability across the country and there doesn't seem to have been any radical change since last week," he said.

Mohammed said embassies with workers in the area had been in touch with the force over security in the last few days.

Eni is boosting its security in North Africa, a source familiar with the matter said, while another added it had not considered repatriation of its foreign staff at El Feel.

BP, which had staff at In Amenas and also has exploration rights in western Libya, has a few expatriate staff in Tripoli and fewer than 100 local staff, a spokesman said.

"We are reviewing security across the region," he said.

While the return of foreign oil companies to Libya helped it climb back up close to pre-war output of 1.6 million barrels per day, the full return of expatriate workers has been slow to the country, awash with weapons, because of precarious security.

Elahrash said movement outside a desert camp or oilfield has to be accompanied by members of the oil protection force.

"Everyone knows that protecting the oilfields is something very important - the foreign oil companies would not work here unless the security was good," he said. "No local or foreign company has received a single threat ... The security conditions of all the companies working in oilfields are very good."

However the force admits it does not have the equipment it needs: proper communications, night vision equipment or cars for the desert. Instead, the guard, of which 2,000 are army-trained, use medium to light weapons left over from the war.

"We are missing technology and new materials but at the same time we are able to protect all these areas in fields with the old equipment we already have," Elahrash said, adding the training the guards still lacked could begin in March.

"They must learn how to work in oilfields, how to secure them," he said, adding about 3,500 men had already been trained.

The men signed contracts with the force, which has a budget from the National Oil Corporation to pay salaries, which start at 1,000 ($770) Libyan dinars a month and reach 1,600 dinars.

Asked what message he could give to worried foreign oil companies, Elahrash said: "The Libyan nation can protect all the foreigners who work on its land."

NFL looking into Brady's slide vs Ravens

(AP) ? The NFL is looking into Tom Brady's leg-up slide that hit Ravens safety Ed Reed in the AFC championship game.

League spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday "any play of that nature is routinely reviewed."

Brady could be subject to a fine if the league believes he violated any player safety rules.

During the final minute of the first half, Brady slid at the end of an impromptu run. The quarterback's upraised leg hit the onrushing Reed, who temporarily limped away. Reed was not injured.

Reed says Brady attempted to apologize this week for the slide.

"He actually reached out to me, texted me," Reed told WJZ-FM in Baltimore. "I tried to text him back, but the message exploded after 12 seconds, so I had to call him. ... He's just apologized and what not. But I told him, 'You know, it's good, man.'"

Reed did not believe Brady was trying to hurt him.

"I know he's a great player," Reed said. "I respect Brady and his game for all it stands for, and I know he's not a dirty player. And emotions get going in the game."

Ravens safety Bernard Pollard said Monday that Brady should be disciplined by the NFL, which levies fines on defensive players for helmet-to-helmet hits.

"If you want to keep this going in the right direction, everyone should be penalized for their actions," Pollard said, adding Brady "knew what he was doing.

"It has to go both ways. Hopefully the NFL will do something about it. If they don't, that's fine. If they do, then that's fine."

Baltimore beat New England 28-13 for the AFC championship Sunday.

"We set out to design the grittiest Moog synth ever, one that still offers all of the great sound and flexibility that Moog synthesizers are known for, but that also really has teeth," said president Mike Adams. The budget-friendly price tag of $1,100 is sure to temp those who've been eyeing Moog's wares, but units won't start shipping until March. Consult the source link to part with your funds and jump past the break for a walkthrough with synth pioneer Herb Deutsch.

City of Horror review ? Reviews ? Board Game ? Eurogamer.net

When Eurogamer asked me to start doing board game reviews, I had no idea where to start after video game licenses. The Board Game Geek database holds 62,000 games. Where the hell to begin?

So let's begin with hell.

Zombie video games usually miss the point of zombie fiction. The point isn't the brightness of human nature in a crisis, but the darkness. City of Horror, then, offers its three to six players the best zombie game since DayZ.

City of Horror sees everyone trying to shepherd a personal handful of survivors - your people - through just four hours in a 28 Days Later-type zombie apocalypse. And you're going to make a terrible, disgusting, amoral mess of it, because this isn't Left 4 Dead. City of Horror has no safe rooms, no heroes and no hope. It does have a couple of guns... but you won't be using them on the zombies.

Here's the problem. City of Horror has five buildings - the church, bank, gun shop, hospital and water tower - and at the start of the game everyone's survivors are scattered throughout. Your Burglar, say, ends up in the church with your friend's Businesswoman and his girlfriend's Chef.

Every turn (each representing an in-game hour), more zombies are added to every building. But you're OK. You're fine. At the start of the game, everyone gets a secret hand of one-shot cards to help them manage the zombies, including that church. "We're OK. It's fine," you say, your Burglar using a molotov cocktail card to blow up some zombies, buying you another hour. Phew. You're the table's hero!

A question, then: how do you react when someone then fires a flare gun out of the window of the hospital, luring some of its zombies away... and back over to the church? Suddenly, you're overrun again. "You son of a bitch!" you cry, hurt. But this player excuses themselves. They have no weapon cards, they say, and they explain that you should be grateful that they didn't trip your building's fire alarm instead. Are they lying? Should you forgive them? How do you react?

Congratulations. You are now playing City of Horror, where this reshuffling of zombies can be compared to the world's most horrible game of musical chairs. Eventually, though, the music stops, and the survivors in an overrun building have one means of saving themselves.

3

City of Horror is a modern implementation of 2005 game Mall of Horror, with an assortment of tweaks. The water tower in this is the old CCTV room.

They have to feed the zombies a survivor.

One player is going to have a survivor bundled out of the building like terrified post through Hell's own letterbox. You'll argue. You'll plead. You'll use cards, trade cards, trade food, or even the precious plague vaccine tokens that are like cardboard gold. Bartering your options, your very hope, away.

Then the vote occurs, always taking the form of an excellently theatrical "3, 2, 1...", before everyone points simultaneously at who they want to shove outside. Of course, none of those agreements you just made are binding. Again: how are you going to react when you hand your own, real-life brother a vaccine and he pockets it, only to vote for you anyway, playing you for a sucker?

I'll tell you what you'll do. You'll stare at the board, like a disassembled gun, and try to figure out how to murder him.

Really, the discussion and voting at the heart of City of Horror is the biggest reason I chose it, even over that accessible zombie theme or the fact that it's just an amazing game. I picked it because it plays to one of the strengths of board games as a platform over video games, which is talking. Here's an entire genre of gaming that video games have left unexplored - but more than that, it makes use of the best, most surprising, most powerful component at any board game's disposal - the friends or family sat opposite you.

When people imagine board gaming, thoughts of Chess or Cluedo rise to the surface of their minds like scum on bathwater: games spent staring down at a board. City of Horror is, in part, such a dramatic experience because you play it looking up at your friends. It's personal. And because it's personal and so much fun, you'll be laughing almost as much as you're panicking.

2

The drama around this game in the board game scene was to do with it getting plastic stands rather than miniatures. Dark days.

Here are just a few highlights from my first ever game of City of Horror: a Priest pushing my Teenager out of a water tower. My Burglar dashing for the bank, only for another player to lock the door, leaving him marooned in the board's central crossroads like an ambulatory kebab. Two players threatening one another, both trying to sound intimidating, collapsing the rest of the table into hysterics because they're arguing about the fate of a two-dimensional cardboard chef.

As a game, it's partly so emotive and exciting because of the binary nature of success. There is no slow amassing of points, no chipping away at some greater task. There's just one of your guys getting eaten, or you giggling outrageously as someone else gets eaten. Every second of every turn, there's only one question: "ARE YOUR BALLS IN A FIRE Y/N". If they are, you're terrified. If they're not, you're laughing.

Every clean corner of City of Horror's design fosters tension and talking, ultimately powering the game, making it thrum to life on your kitchen table. We've already mentioned the secret cards that both represent a dwindling resource (tension) and engender love and hate (talking), but they can also be played at any time at all, switching up the puzzle (tension) and enabling them to take a role as you canvass your friends for votes (talking).

But this game's not done. Your dwindling options and your desperate dialogues are drawn out by a final pit-stop. Every survivor card is actually double-sided, and you can flip it - once - to use that character's power. The kid can hide. The burglar can break into a building that's full. The pregnant woman gives birth, giving her two votes. But if you do use these, those survivors are worth fewer points at the end of the game.

4

If you get a bum hand of elderly survivors, it just means more points if you can get them through the night. Also, nobody suspects gramps has a holdout pistol.

Well, most of the survivors have a one shot power. The two most valuable survivors, Grandpa and The Blonde, are actually hobbled. Gramps is too befuddled to vote, but can be temporarily roused from his medicated stupor to vote once. The Blonde does nothing. At all. Good luck with that!

But we're still not done. Players in the board's three-dimensional water tower can see where zombies will arrive, and can share or not share this information (tension) or lie (talking). There's also the risk that buildings can collapse if players use too many explosives.

But I don't want to get too focused on the fact that this game is inventive, or that its talking feels so fresh, like you're flexing muscles you never knew you had. It's just that there's so much fun packed into its box.

City of Horror speaks of everything amazing about board games right now. You're paying for a set of gorgeous components, and for a game that is not only terrifying, riveting and hilarious, but elegantly tucked up in a thin pamphlet of rules simple enough for kids to understand. If you're OK with your kids coming to the utilitarian conclusion that such and such has to die, that is. But for all of City of Horror's bleakness, given the current state of video games, it's awfully nice to be given a choice.

Activists seek same-sex marriage rights in 'unwinnable' South

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) - Same-sex couples stood at government counters in two North Carolina cities on Monday to ask for marriage licenses they knew they would be denied, part of a push across the U.S. South this month to demand equality even where opposition runs deep.

"We have to leave our home state to get married, so that's a little sad," said L. Rankin, 45, after the assistant register of deeds in her city of Winston-Salem refused a license to her and partner Kristin Hedin, 38.

Couples braved rain and potential ridicule to join the "We Do Campaign," an effort by the nonprofit Campaign for Southern Equality to protest state laws activists believe to be unjust and to call for full equality under federal law.

As part of the campaign, couples in seven Southern states are applying for marriage licenses in January. At the final stop on Thursday, couples expect to be denied licenses in Arlington, Virginia, before marching to Washington, D.C., where same-sex marriage is legal.

Participants say they want their neighbors and lawmakers to know they aren't going away, even if taking a stand can be uncomfortable and risky in a part of the country known for its strong religious ties and history of racial discrimination.

"The South has been written off as being unwinnable when it comes to LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) rights," said Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality and a United Church of Christ minister.

"One of the unintended consequences of that is that LGBT people also get written off," she said.

Gay rights activists billed 2012 as a watershed year after voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington state approved same-sex marriage, and President Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to declare support for such unions.

But the year also brought a sobering reminder for same-sex couples that the momentum lagged in the Southeast. Last May, North Carolina became the last state in the region to add a voter-approved ban on gay marriage to its constitution.

Thirty-one of the 50 U.S. states have passed constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage. Nine states and Washington, D.C., have legalized it.

Some of the 35 couples who have taken part in the "We Do" effort this month have married outside the South but said they still want to live there.

"I can go to a restaurant, and I can order sweet tea and grits and they have them," said Sara Bell, 31, a lifelong resident of Mississippi. "I don't think that I should have to leave those things behind just to be who I am."

STRONG OPPOSITION

Surveys by the Pew Research Center last year showed that while opposition to gay marriage in the South has waned, it is still greater than any other region in the country.

Fifty-six percent of people in the central Southern states, including Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi, oppose allowing same-sex couples to marry, compared with 29 percent who are against same-sex marriage in New England.

The National Organization for Marriage, which opposes allowing same-sex couples to marry, has not taken any action in response to the "We Do Campaign," spokesman Thomas Peters said.

"Obviously these are acts of civil disobedience against laws passed overwhelmingly by voters in those states," he said on Monday.

Support for gay marriage in the South is comparable to where the country as a whole was a decade ago, according to Pew, so activists said their strategy for seeking change their inevitably looks different than in other regions.

The efforts overall are "not very sexy," admits Darlene Nipper, deputy executive director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

That organization is one of many working to build support for marriage equality at the grassroots level, including training volunteers, developing young leaders and working to change the minds of local politicians.

The task force will hold its annual "Creating Change" conference in Atlanta later this month. Nipper said bringing 3,500 activists to that Southern city will generate excitement and help raise the profile of the issues they want addressed.

With no imminent likelihood of winning same-sex marriage rights at the state level in the South, activists are pressing for national change. In March, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in two cases challenging laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Gay rights supporters also are seeking more protections in other areas such as the workplace and schools, said Jeff Graham, executive director of Georgia Equality.

"I really think that you'll see a faster pace of movement in the years to come," he said. "But we have to take a more incremental approach in what our wins are. And frankly we have to give people the space to change their opinions."

Diana Coe, 48, and Li Hooper, 49, whose 2011 wedding at a church in Winston-Salem is not recognized by the state, said they hope to see attitudes change soon.

"We think of ourselves as being married, and then we realize we are second-class citizens," Coe said.

Andy Pettitte and Mark Teixeira will represent the United States at the World Baseball Classic this March, according to multiple published reports.

CBSSports.com?s Jon Heyman reported the news first. Former Yankee manager Joe Torre will lead Team USA. Torre managed Pettitte from 1996 to 2003 and again in 2007.

Pettitte and Teixeira have never played in the WBC. Teixeira turned down the chance to play in 2009, right after he'd signed a free agent contract with the Yankees.

The two Yankees will be joined by Mets third baseman David Wright. Derek Jeter, who played in the first two World Baseball Classics, will not play for Torre as he is recovering from a broken ankle suffered last October.

The U.S. will play its first game against Mexico on March 8 at Chase Field in Phoenix. The roster will be formally unveiled on Thursday.

Another big moment, a bigger stage for Henley

HONOLULU (AP) ? Russell Henley has delivered big moments before, just not to this degree, and certainly not on this kind of a stage.

Not even three months after he celebrated getting a PGA Tour card, Henley made his rookie debut with a three-shot win Sunday in the Sony Open that will not be forgotten anytime soon because of the sheer numbers.

He birdied the last five holes to shatter the tournament scoring record by four shots.

His score of 24-under 256 was the second-lowest in PGA Tour history for a 72-hole event, two shots behind Tommy Armour III in 2003 at the Texas Open.

He set the Sony Open record for the 36-hole score (126), shared the 54-hole tournament record with fellow rookie Scott Langley (193) and set another tournament record with the lowest closing round by a champion at 7-under 63.

About the only time he looked like a rookie was when he walked off the 18th green and said, "I don't really know what happened."

What he did was play some really good golf and rode a putting stroke that was pure over four days at Waialae Country Club.

He made 26 birdies ? 18 of them on the par 4s, the most at this tournament in the last 30 years ? and a collection of pars equally important. Henley, a 23-year-old from Georgia, made a 15-foot par putt with a foot of break on the sixth hole, and another par putt from 10 feet on the 12th hole to stay two shots clear of Langley and Tim Clark.

The rest was simply a blur. The final hour began with a 45-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole, and of his last four birdies, the only one inside 10 feet was on the 18th hole. Henley punched the air with a sweeping uppercut, the first time all day he allowed himself to think about winning and all that goes with it ? particularly that trip to the Masters.

"It's been my goal to make it to the Masters my whole life," he said. "I'm kind of speechless right now."

Clark played in the last group, closed with a 63 and still finished three shots behind. He made seven birdies over his last 11 holes and only made up one shot on Henley.

"I gave it all I had, and he just played phenomenal," Clark said, a runner-up for the second time in three years at the Sony Open.

"He just never seemed to put a foot wrong, and when he did, he made those par putts," he said. "That's when you know a guy is comfortable, when he's making those 8- to 10-footers for par. But I still got on the 15th hole and said, 'Well, let's finish with four birdies and see what happens.' And sure enough, he birdied the last four, too. When a guy plays that well and beats you, you just have to be happy for them."

Clark knew enough about Henley that this wasn't a total surprise.

Henley tied for low amateur ? with Langley ? in the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. A year later, he won a Nationwide Tour event while still at Georgia. And in his first year on the developmental tour, he won twice with clutch moments. He won his first Web.com Tour event by going from a fairway bunker into the water and making a 10-foot bogey putt to get into a playoff. He won a few weeks later by making a 20-foot birdie putt on the last hole to force another playoff.

"I've been in this situation a lot the last five or six tournaments," he said.

Henley became the first player to win in his debut as a PGA Tour rookie since Garrett Willis in the 2001 Tucson Open. That was played opposite the winners-only Mercedes Championships at Kapalua, so it wasn't a strong field. The Sony Open was the first full-field event of the year, featuring five Ryder Cup players.

"First pro PGA event, it's pretty cool to see him doing so well," Matt Kuchar said.

Henley walked into his news conference with two leis draped around his neck as he stared into his phone, talking on Face Time with his mother, Sally. He came to Hawaii on his own, and lamented that he had a lot of meals by himself.

That's about how he looked at times at Waialae. No one was around him.

Langley, tied for the lead at the start of the round, fell back quickly. He went over the back of the green into rough that made him wonder if his pitch shot would come out hot, and instead it didn't come close to reaching the green. He made bogey as Henley hit his approach into 3 feet for a birdie and a two-shot swing.

Langley three times missed birdie putts from 5 feet on the front nine, though he still was only two shots behind. He just couldn't keep pace. Langley closed with two birdies for a 70 to tie for third with Charles Howell III, who had a 66.

"I wish I would have played a little bit better today and made some more putts," said Langley, who missed three birdie putts of 5 feet on the front nine. "But Russell played so awesome. I don't even know if I could have caught him."

Howell, twice a runner-up at the Sony Open, had his lowest score ever at Waialae and was seven shots behind.

"Russell didn't falter one bit," Howell said.

Henley hasn't done anything wrong in about four months. In his past five tournaments dating to the end of September ? four of those on the Web.com Tour ? Henley is 73-under par. His scoring average in those five events is 67.15.

There's no telling where this will lead him. Thanks to his play on the Web.com Tour last year ? No. 3 on the money list and two wins ? Henley goes to No. 50 in the world. His win puts him in the Masters, PGA Championship, The Players Championship and the Bridgestone Invitational. And at No. 50 in the world and tied for the top of the FedEx Cup standings, he's likely to get into the next two World Golf Championships ? the Match Play at the end of February, Doral in early March.

Not bad for his rookie debut in the big leagues.

"When you get up close and watch a guy play ... if that's how he putts all the time, whew! It's over," Clark said.

And it was.

Dassault, India tussle over supply chains

India's defense ministry reiterated that Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. will remain lead integrator for producing 108 Rafale fighters under the medium multirole combat aircraft contract.

Replacing HAL as integrator would jeopardize the procurement process carried out to secure the $15 billion deal with Dassault Aviation in France that was signed in January 2012.

The MMRCA contract called for final and exclusive negotiations with Dassault before production begins.

Under the tender issued in 2007, the first 18 of 126 of the twin-engine delta-wing fighters will be supplied by Dassault from its facilities in France. The remaining 108 will be produced under license by HAL at its Indian factories.

A deviation from the tender issued for the project would need to be approved by the Defense Acquisition Council and legal issues could arise, ministry sources told the Press Trust of India.

The ministry issued its statement after coming under pressure from Dassault to clarify the role of HAL so the French manufacturer could explore options for working with other companies.

Defense officials said it would convey final details of the relationship to Dassault and HAL this month, the PTI report said.

HAL is a Navratna company -- a government business -- and has 19 production and overhaul divisions and 10 research and development centers in India, the company's Web site said. It has 33,000 employees of which around half have "more than a decade of aircraft industry experience."

Dassault has been pressing the government for more freedom to choose its supply chain partners in light of a deal it signed -- shortly after getting the MMRCA contract -- with India's Reliance Industries Ltd. for working together in defense and homeland security agreements.

"Dassault Aviation, a major player in the global aerospace industry, has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Reliance Industries, for pursuing strategic opportunities of collaboration in the area of complex manufacturing and support in India," officials of the two companies told PTI shortly after Dassault landed the MMRCA deal.

The PTI report said Dassault had told the ministry that if it had overall responsibility for the project, it should have the freedom to decide on the proportion of work done by HAL and other private companies.

In February the PTI reported that Dassault must reinvest 50 percent of the worth of the deal back into Indian defense sector.

The aerospace and security division of the Reliance Industries is headed by Vivek Lall, who has been closely associated with the MMRCA deal while spearheading the campaign for Boeing in the deal.

Dassault won the hard-fought MMRCA contract by beating EADS with its Eurofighter Typhoon, Boeing with its F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Lockheed Martin's F-16, the Russian-made MiG-35 and the Gripen from Swedish firm Saab.

The loss was a blow to EADS which less than two months before, in December 2010, had lost out to Lockheed Martin's fifth-generation fighter F-35 Lightning II in a major Japanese military contract.

Japan chose the F-35 also over Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet in a deal estimated at around $7 billion for 42 planes.

A few of our favorite things: The coming year's most thrilling technologies

7 hrs.

Every January,?reporters on the tech beat kiss their families goodbye and?surrender a week of their lives to the concrete fauxtopia of Las Vegas, in exchange for knowledge of the?things to come.

This year, at that Consumer Electronics Show of which I speak, we saw?forks that track what you eat, robots that cling to windows, chairs that block out unwanted?noise, and other wonders. We also learned that your next TV may well have four times the resolution of your current one, and that "smart TV" may not be so dumb after all.

Slideshows:?Sights of CES and Celebs show their nerdy side

We might not have been to every corner of the 1.4?million square feet of show floor (though?our feet sure feel like they've walked it all) but we used our reporting powers to seek out the best inventions and evolutions of CES 2013, and here they are:

Ultra high definition TV - The next wave of TVs will be UHD, with four times the resolution of "full" 1080p high def. You can't see the pixels from three feet away, and since?TVs keep getting bigger, it almost just makes sense. Samsung put out a 110-inch model that will ship to very rich people later this year, but even those among us without suites in the Burj Al Dubai will probably be able to afford a smaller UHD TV within a year or two.

Sony Xperia Z smartphone?- What's better than a beautiful 5-inch 1080p phone with tempered?glass on the front and back? How about a 13-megapixel camera and "intelligent auto" shooting? And what if it were water- and dust-resistant? That's the Xperia Z.

Silentium Quiet Bubble prototype chair - You can take a load off of your ears when you sit in this chair. It's flanked with noise-canceling speakers much like what you might find in popular travel headphones, and can cut down loud annoying ambient sounds.

LG laser projector - The best way to get a 100-inch picture right now is not to email Samsung and beg for their huge TV. No, it's to use LG's Laser TV, a projection system that can sit right as close as 22?inches from the specially designed screen and blast a picture so bright you can watch it in the daytime.

Evado Filip Vivoplay kid watch?- A cellphone embedded in this small kids' watch means that you can use GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular towers to track the little ones, but if they do get lost or run into trouble, they push the little red button: The watch starts calling family members until one picks up.

Winbot window cleaner - Roomba got nothing on Winbot, the cleaning robot that has enough suction to stick to windows as it cleans. You still have to move it from window to window, and the version we saw doesn't have a battery, but the concept is bound to take off ... er, to stick.

WheeMe massage robot - What do you do while one robot is cleaning the house? Enjoy a relaxing massage from another robot. This semi-autonomous vibrating car thingy that drives all over your back is surprisingly comforting, though it's so lightweight, a?deep-tissue rubdown is out of the question. ??

Pebble smartwatch - Smartwatches are all the rage at CES 2013, which is a bit surprising because they look as?chunky as ever. But we can see the allure in the Pebble, with?e-paper?screen and the ability to pair with iPhones and Android phones via Bluetooth to tell you who's calling or texting you.

iPotty from CTA Digital - Show this to any parent who's recently endured their toddler's?potty training, and we bet?they'll say, "I'll take it!" Pairing a training toilet with an iPad case is about the best innovation in potty training since the Potty Watch.

ZBoard?electric skateboard - Once?fearless NBC News reporter Rosa Golijan mastered the basics of this sturdy machine, she proved its ease?of?use by wearing 4-inch heels. Don't try that at home, but it is a great alternative to the car; the skateboard can take you up to?10 miles on a charge.

Samsung and Panasonic?smart TVs - Everybody has smart TVs now, but we liked Samsung's redesign,?based on five separate intuitive screens. Panasonic won us over because its new smart TVs will have home screens you can customize with your favorite apps and content.

Lenovo?table PC - No, don't call it a tablet PC, the?IdeaCentre Horizon is a?table PC, one that is meant to sit flat so that, in group settings, more than one person can multitouch at the same time. We're not sure who's going to use it, and for what, but it's definitely an eyebrow-raising?innovation.

Hapifork?digital utensil?- How many times do you stab a bit of chicken and suddenly?wonder ? in the split second before it goes into your mouth ? how much it weighs? No longer will this plague you, thanks to the Hapilabs smart fork, intended for geeks on diets.

Nvidia Project Shield gaming console - CES isn't really a gaming show, so Nvidia's announcement of an Android-based handheld gaming console came as a surprise. But?what better way to launch its smokin' fast Tegra 4 processor??

Whirlpool Fireplace concept - In the not too distant future, we'll be cooking with light. At least that's what Whirlpool researchers in Italy are working on as part of their attempt to rethink the traditional hearth. After all, in many homes, cooking and socializing have become one and the same.

Canon PowerShot N camera?- A cute square?point-and-shoot?meant to feed the?Instagram craze, the PowerShot N has Wi-Fi and a touchscreen, and only a few buttons. Take a shot by pressing on the bezel around the lens, and it instantly creates a bevy of shots with all kinds of crops and filters.

TrackingPoint rifle?- A hunting rifle gets the "Top Gun" makeover with a heads-up display and smart trigger. Once you've picked your target, the system calculates the best trajectory based on wind,?humidity and other factors.?Squeeze the trigger, but the gun won't fire until you're in perfect position.
