Elementary school teacher, family homeless after house destroyed ...

News 12 This Morning / Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012

CLEARWATER, S.C. -- A family has been left with nothing more than the clothes on their backs after their home caught on fire early Thursday morning.

The home belongs to a family with three young children ages 2, 6 and 8. The father is a fifth grade teacher at North Aiken Elementary school and the mother works at GHSU.

Thursday night was just a normal night in the McClary home.

"I had just put some white clothes in the dryer," explained father, Quinton McClary.

Their children were in bed while Mr. McClary was finishing up some nightly chores.

"The smoke started, so I turned the dryer off and opened the window and tried to beat the fire myself," he said.

By that point, the fire was already too big.

"I told my wife to call 911 immediately, and I got them out the house, and it was just out of my hands from that standpoint," he said.

It spread quickly through the whole house.

"The hardest part for me was just being here and it was out of my control," McClary said. "I couldn't do anything except get my family out. I'm thankful to God that we got them out but that was just the hardest part."

Now, they're left to face a harsh reality.

"The four main rooms are pretty much damaged, especially the back end of the house and the fireman said there's smoke damage throughout the rest of the house," McClary said.

Firefighters say 50 percent of the house was destroyed by fire everything else by smoke.

"Memories, clothes, material things, you know everything," he said. "We weren't able to get any clothes out except what we're wearing right now."

But the fire took a lot more than just possessions. Quinton and his family have lived in the house for 10 years and it's also the home his wife grew up in, built by her grandmother more than 40 years ago.

"The memories that we've had here and we've made here, but I know things can be restored. The main thing is we're safe and that's the main thing," McClary said.

The fire broke out around 1:15 a.m. They also lost all the Christmas gifts under the tree that they had just purchased this past Saturday.

Bowles Construction came out to board up the home and make sure everything was secure. The McClary's are staying next door with family.

If you are interested in helping out the family, email hope.jensen@wrdw.com. The biggest thing they are in need of right now is clothing for the children and work clothing for the parents.

Clothing sizes for the family:

  • 2-year-old boy: 24 months, shoe size: 6 or 7
  • 6-year-old girl: 8 slim, shoe size: 13
  • 8-year-old boy: 10, shoe size: 2 1/2
  • Mother: 2X top / 3X bottom, shoe size: 10 1/2
  • Father: XL shirt, shoe size: 10 1/2

Joe Allbritton, 87, DC media, banking giant dies

McLEAN, Va. (AP) ? Joe L. Allbritton, who became one of Washington's most influential men through a media conglomerate of newspapers and television stations and a financial empire that once included Riggs Bank, died Wednesday. He was 87.

He was suffering from heart ailments and died at a hospital in Houston, where he lived, said Frederick J. Ryan Jr., president of Arlington, Va.-based Allbritton Communications Co.

Allbritton's fortune was self-made, beginning with real estate trades and banking investments. By age 33, he was a millionaire, Ryan said.

His media holdings included eight television stations in seven markets, including WJLA, the ABC affiliate in Washington whose call letters bear his initials. In an era of corporate media ownership, WJLA stood out as a family-owned station. Ryan said it is the largest privately owned ABC affiliate in the country. Its sister station, NewsChannel 8, was the first of its kind ? a local all-news cable channel.

He owned the Washington Star from 1974 to 1978 before he was forced to sell the venerable newspaper to Time Inc. to comply with federal regulations governing cross-ownership of media platforms; it folded a few years later.

But decades later Allbritton watched with pride as his son Robert founded one of the successes of the new media era, Politico, a must-read online and print publication for political junkies.

The elder Allbritton was also the principal stockholder in Riggs Bank for more than 20 years, including its final years, which were mired in scandal. Riggs, an old-line Washington institution that provided banking services to large numbers of embassies during his tenure at the helm, got into trouble for concealing suspicious transactions involving former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, whose regime was responsible for widespread killings and human rights violations.

Riggs executives, including Allbritton, regularly wrote letters to the late Pinochet soliciting his business.

In 1997, Allbritton wrote to Pinochet: "I am pleased to report the business relationship between Riggs and the Chilean Military is prospering. I am also grateful for our thriving personal friendship, which you have demonstrated through your gracious hospitality and stalwart support of the Riggs. .You have rid Chile from the threat of totalitarian government and an archaic economic system based on state-owned property and centralized planning. We in the United States and the rest of the western hemisphere owe you a tremendous debt of gratitude."

In 2004, federal officials ordered Riggs to pay a then-record $25 million civil fine for alleged violations of money-laundering laws. The following year, Riggs pleaded guilty to a felony charge of failing to report suspicious transactions involving foreigners, including Pinochet and family members. Riggs also agreed to pay a $16 million criminal fine. A federal judge said the bank had become "a greedy corporate henchman of dictators and their corrupt regimes."

Shortly thereafter the bank, which had hosted the accounts of 23 U.S. presidents and had a prominent location on Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House, was acquired by Pittsburgh-based PNC Financial Services Group Inc.

Allbritton stepped down as Riggs CEO in 2001; at the time, the Allbritton family controlled roughly 40 percent of the bank's stock.

Former George Washington University President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, an Allbritton friend who served on the Riggs board, said Allbritton was "a 20th century banker in that he had relationships with all of his major clients. He loved working with the ambassadorial community and being a player on the world stage." That style was not as well-suited for the changes that gripped modern banking, as community banks were getting squeezed out and federal regulators demanded greater transparency.

He was a fixture on the D.C. social circuit, though he rarely gave interviews. He was friends with Britain's Prince Charles and was reportedly invited to the wedding last year of Prince William and Kate Middleton. When Prince Charles visited the U.S. in May 2011, he traveled on a private jet lent to him by Allbritton.

He and his wife Barbara socialized with Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and their wives.

Former first lady Nancy Reagan said in a statement, "Ronnie and I considered Joe and his wife, Barby, to be dear friends and I will miss his great sense of humor."

For all his Washington ties, Trachtenberg said Allbritton was a longtime Texan with a distinctive drawl whose ties to his home state were apparent "every time he opened his mouth."

"His life in Texas was separate altogether. Texas is where the Christmas cards came from," Trachtenberg said. "He was a nice man with old-fashioned good manners."

Jerry Fritz, senior vice president of Allbritton Communications, who worked for Allbritton's companies for 25 years, described him as "one of the great raconteurs."

His philanthropic efforts were extensive, including large gifts to Baylor University in Texas and George Mason University in northern Virginia. He was heavily involved in horse racing and owned the thoroughbred Hansel, which won the final two legs of the Triple Crown in 1991.

At the height of his influence "if there was something important happening in D.C, Joe Allbritton was involved, right in the center of it," Fritz said.

He was born in D'Lo, Miss., and raised in Houston. He served in the Navy during World War II and received a law degree from Baylor. He went on to run funeral- home and insurance businesses as well as to sit on various arts and university boards.

Allbritton's family said in a statement that his life "was defined by a love, wit, charm and attentiveness that will be forever cherished by all of us. Joe's life was also one of great achievement, as a businessman, innovator and philanthropist. He was fiercely passionate and unfailingly generous."

1,500 China-bound elephant tusks seized

Bazuki Muhammad / Reuters

Malaysian customs officers on Wednesday show elephant tusks smuggled inside wood planks.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Some 1,500 African elephant tusks???the biggest seizure ever ? were found this week hidden within timber planks and destined for China's ivory market. Shocked conservationists noted 2012 will now go down as the worst year in 24 years of records???and warned that 2013 could be even worse.

"In 2011 we thought the threats to elephants couldn't get any worse and 2012 draws to a close with the depressing news that the slaughter of elephants hasn't even drawn close to their zenith," said Jason Bell, who runs the International Fund for Animal Welfare's elephant program. "The illegal trade is simply voracious in its appetite for ivory."

Hidden in 10 crates shipped in two cargo containers, the tusks were found Monday by Malaysian customs officials at the port near Kuala Lumpur. The shipment had come from Togo in West Africa.

The tusks weigh about 20 tons, nearly as much as all that was seized in 2011???a year when an estimated 25,000 elephants were slaughtered for their tusks. For all of 2012, about 34 tons have been seized.

Ivory can fetch up to $1,000 a pound, the World Wildlife Fund said in a new report on poaching of elephants, rhinos and tigers.

"The bloody ivory trade has reached new heights of destruction and depravity in 2012," echoed? Will Travers, head of Born Free USA.?

"No part of Africa is now safe," he added. "Across the continent, for the first time, the number of carcasses recorded as a result of poaching exceeds the number reportedly dying from natural causes."?

The groups worry that the start of Africa's dry season will fuel a new round of poaching in the coming weeks. Since 1979, when Africa still had an estimated 1.3 million elephants, the population has declined to an estimated 450,000 in 2007, according to the group Save the Elephants.

Some 150 armed Sudanese men were seen riding on camels and horses across the Central African Republic a few weeks ago and locals suspect they were looking for elephant herds, according to a report on nationalgeographic.com.

Conservationists fear another massacre like the one in Cameroon earlier this year when some 600 elephants inside a national park?? half the local population???were killed.?

The tusks from that slaughter were never recovered, Bell noted.?

A poaching resurgence has pushed up the price of ivory, resulting in more elephant carnage. But some of the baby elephants orphaned in the wake of such violence will survive -- thanks to the dedication of naturalist Daphne Sheldrick. NBC's Chelsea Clinton reports.

"It is an indication of an illegal industry completely out of control that lawmakers still have no idea where the massive amounts of ivory poached in Cameroon have gone," he said.

The groups urged the international community to fund a protection plan already endorsed by African nations with elephant populations.

Bell said needed actions include "swift DNA identification of seized ivory, so that we know how and where to point our efforts to prevent further poaching and close down transit routes for smuggled ivory."

Related: Religious groups rally to save elephants, rhinos

China's status as an authorized ivory trading nation is also under fire from conservationists, who want it revoked until it can prove that the only ivory traded is from legally authorized stockpiles.

Born Free, for its part, has started an online campaign at?bloodyivory.org?to build public pressure against China.

As for the latest seizure, Malaysian officials did not make any arrests but are investigating a local trading company involved with the shipment. It could face fines and any individuals found guilty of knowingly trading in the tusks could get up to five years in prison, customs officials said.

Man accused in Ore. mall shooting wanted to travel

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? To police and witnesses, Jacob Tyler Roberts was a gunman on a mission, shooting numerous rounds from a semiautomatic rifle as he stalked through a Portland mall, ultimately killing two people and seriously injuring another. To Roberts' shocked friends and family, he was just Jake, a happy, easygoing 22-year-old who liked video games and talked about moving to Hawaii.

"Jake was never the violent type," Roberts' ex-girlfriend, Hannah Patricia Sansburn, told ABC News. "His main goal was to make you laugh, smile, make you feel comfortable. You can't reconcile the differences.

"I hate him for what he did, but I can't hate the person I knew because it was nothing like the person who would go into a mall and go on a rampage," she said.

The Clackamas County sheriff's office said Roberts had several fully loaded magazines when he arrived at the mall Tuesday. Roberts parked his 1996 green Volkswagen Jetta in front of the second-floor entrance to Macy's and walked through the store into the mall and began firing randomly in the food court.

He fatally shot Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45, and Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, the sheriff said. Kristina Shevchenko, 15, was wounded and in serious condition Wednesday.

Sansburn said Roberts had recently quit his job at a gyro shop in Portland and sold all of his belongings, telling her he was moving to Hawaii. He was supposed to take a flight Saturday but told her he got drunk and missed it.

"And then this happens. ... It makes me think, was he even planning on going to Hawaii?" Sansburn told ABC News.

Sansburn didn't return phone messages left by The Associated Press, and no one answered the door at her home Wednesday.

On a Facebook page that a friend identified as Roberts', a few photos show Roberts with friends, while one shows the back of a person in a knit cap firing what appears to be a handgun at targets. The cover photo is of a wall painted in graffiti with the message "Follow Your Dreams" and the word "Canceled" stamped across it.

In the public portion of his page, Roberts wrote: "I may be young but I have lived one crazy life so far."

"I'm the kind of person that is going to do what I want," he wrote. "There is no reason for another person to tell you what to do, I'm the conductor of my choo choo train."

He added he was "a bit of an adrenaline junkie" who was "just looking to meet new people and see the world."

A former neighbor of Roberts said he liked to play video games and never seemed troubled.

"We knocked on each other's door every morning. Every day to hang out, to talk," said Samantha Bennett, who added she went to middle school with Roberts but wasn't close to him until he moved in with a girlfriend across the hall from her at an apartment complex in summer 2011.

"If me and my boyfriend were fighting, he was there to talk to me," Bennett said. "We would go to the bar together. I don't get it."

Roberts' dining room was decorated like a jungle, Bennett said ? just one of the quirky things he did. He had green lights and put ivy on the walls.

He once showed her a black handgun that she believed he purchased legally. He dropped out of sight earlier this year, and his phone was disconnected, she said.

More recently, Roberts rented a basement room in a modest, single-story Portland home and hadn't lived there long, neighbor Bobbi Bates said. She said she saw him leave at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday wearing a dark jacket and jeans, carrying a guitar case.

Police say the suspect had stolen an AR-15 rifle from someone he knew.

The first 911 call came in at 3:29 p.m. Officers arrived a minute later. Instead of waiting for SWAT teams, police immediately entered the crowded mall.

Police told people inside to put their hands in the air, to make sure an armed person wasn't among them. Police spent hours clearing the 1.4 million-square-foot mall, as some workers and shoppers continued to hide in fear.

Wearing a hockey-style face mask and dark clothing, Roberts fled along a mall corridor and into a back hallway, down stairs and into a corner where police found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, authorities said.

Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said the fact that more people weren't killed was due to several factors. The suspect's gun jammed at one point; the mall implemented an immediate lockdown; and a large number of officers arrived on-scene quickly, "curtailing the suspect's ability to move around the mall."

"Ten thousand people in the mall at one time kept a level head. They got themselves out of the mall. They helped others get out, and there are just a number of heroes that took the time to help people get out," the sheriff said. "It was really about a full group of people coming together to make a difference."

Mercedes recalls 5,800 vehicles due to fire risk

3 hrs.

Mercedes-Benz has become the latest automaker forced to order a recall due to a potential fire risk on almost 6,000 of its luxury sedans, coupes and crossovers.

A who?s-who of automotive brand names has been caught up by fire-related issues -- ranging from leaky engines to power window switches that could inadvertently short-circuit ? so far this year.

The latest entrant into this select club is Mercedes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordering the recall of about 5,800 of the German maker?s products ? covering eight separate models ? because of a faulty fuel filter flange.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Jurors Name North American Car, Truck of the Year Finalists

According to regulators, a defect in the molding process can led the flange to crack and possibly spill gasoline during refueling. That, in turn, could cause a fire.

The models covered by the recall include the C300, CL550, CL63 AMG, E350, GLK350, S400 Hybrid, S550 and S63 AMG.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Romney?s Jeep Claim called the Political ?Lie of the Year?

The maker plans to notify owners and begin the repairs next month ? at no charge ? once dealers across the country have a sufficient supply of replacement parts.

The Mercedes recall follows a series of other fire-related safety actions that now have affected around 4 million vehicles in the U.S. market alone this year.?

The Detroit Bureau:?BMW Teases New M6 Gran Coupe

The largest of the recall was announced earlier in autumn when Toyota recalled 2.5 million vehicles sold in the U.S. ? and nearly 7.5 million worldwide ? due to a faulty window switch that can short-circuit and cause a fire.

Ford most recently recalled its newest Fusion and Escape models because of a potential engine coolant leak. The fluid could come in contact with hot engine components and catch fire. It was the third fire-related recall of the Escape this year.

Syrian opposition leader calls on Alawites to rise up

MARRAKECH, Morocco (Reuters) - The leader of Syria's opposition coalition called on the country's Alawite minority on Wednesday to launch a campaign of civil disobedience against President Bashar al-Assad, an Alawite who faces a mainly Sunni Muslim uprising against his rule.

Mouaz Alkhatib also told a meeting in Morocco that the opposition would hold world powers, particularly Russia, responsible if Assad uses chemical weapons against rebel fighters. He urged Iran to withdraw personnel he said were supporting Assad in the 20-month-old Syrian conflict.

"We send a direct message to the Alawite brethren. The Syria revolution is extending its hand to you, so extend your hand back and start civil disobedience against the regime because it repressed you like it repressed us," Alkhatib told the "Friends of Syria" ministerial meeting in Marrakech.

"We hold the international community, and especially Russia, fully responsible, if the regime uses chemical weapons against our people," he added, calling on Moscow to end its political and military support for Assad.

Alkhatib, elected last month as leader of the National Coalition for Opposition Forces and the Syrian Revolution, also called on Assad's allies Iran and Hezbollah to withdraw their support.

"We demand that Iran withdraws all of its experts from Syria and we demand the leadership of Hezbollah to withdraw all of its fighters if found in Syria, because their blood must not be spilt defending callous and antiquated regime," he said.
