The Dallas Cowboys need as much preparation as possible for the 2013 NFL season, so on first thought, it?s easy to see why much is being made about Tony Romo not playing in the annual Hall of Fame Game. The extra preseason game gave Dallas an added week of training camp this year and one additional exhibition to use for evaluating young talent and practicing the Cowboys? new 4-3, Tampa 2 defense installed by new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. That?s perfect for the growing defense, but missing a handful of plays on offense isn?t going to hurt Romo.
Look, Romo isn?t a Hall of Famer but he?s also not completely worthless like many casual football fans believe. Is he worth the six-year, $108 million extension the Cowboys gave him this offseason? Probably not, but the guy would have played about five plays at the most during the Hall of Fame Game, which isn?t going to affect how he performs during the regular season one iota.
The Cowboys are obviously a complex team because of the lack of mental toughness throughout the organization that starts at the top with team owner and general manager Jerry Jones and trickles all the way down to the players. Thus, they need as much preparation as possible for every contest as previously mentioned, but four real-time minutes of action a week before the rest of the NFL starts the preseason won?t make a bit of difference for Romo, who really shouldn?t be playing anyway just to give his back another week of rest after surgery in May to remove a cyst.
So Cowboys fans, I know you?re anxious to see the team in whatever ?real game? action you can just like me, but Romo sitting out this overly-glorified exhibition is not a big deal and it?s probably for the best. Just relax and wait until the regular season starts and hope that Jason Garrett doesn?t screw this team over yet again this year.
